The Lunchbox story (no spoilers)
In Mumbai, a lunchbox meant for Ila's husband Rajeev is mistakenly delivered to Saajan Fernandes, a widowed office worker nearing retirement, by the city's famously efficient dabbawallahs. Ila, a young housewife, realizes the error when her husband doesn't comment on the food and includes a note in the next lunchbox. Saajan replies, and the two begin exchanging notes through the lunchbox, sharing details of their lives and building a fantasy world together. This correspondence becomes a quiet refuge for both: Ila feels unseen in her marriage, and Saajan is lonely and set in his ways. As their connection deepens through written words, the fantasy threatens to overwhelm their reality. The film is a tender drama-romance about mistaken connections, loneliness, and the courage to imagine a different life.
Should you watch The Lunchbox?
Watch it for
- Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur deliver nuanced performances as Saajan Fernandes and Ila, carrying the film's quiet emotional weight through notes rather than dialogue.
- Director Ritesh Batra uses Mumbai's dabbawallah lunchbox system as a charming and believable setup for an unlikely romance.
- The 104-minute runtime keeps the story tight, with Max Richter's music adding to the contemplative tone.
- Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Shaikh brings warmth and humor as Saajan's colleague, balancing the film's melancholy.
Skip it if
- You prefer fast-paced plots with big dramatic moments; this is a slow, quiet film driven by small exchanges.
- You dislike stories that hinge on letters and internal monologue rather than action or dialogue-heavy scenes.
