S. J. Suryah began his film career by assisting directors Vasanth and Sabapathy. He made his directorial debut with Vaalee in 1999, and its success brought him stardom. He went on to direct Kushi (2000), New (2004) and Isai (2015). In recent years, Suryah has gained attention as an actor for his portrayals of quirky, unique characters. He played Sudalai in Spyder (2017) and Daniel Arockiaraj in Mersal (2017). In 2021, he appeared as Dhanushkodi in Maanaadu, and in 2022 he played Boominathan in Don. He took on a negative role in Don (2022). In 2023, he played dual roles as Jackie Pandian and Madhan Pandiyan in Mark Antony, and as Kirubai and Ray Das in Jigarthanda DoubleX, where he showed a more dramatic side in a protagonist role. In 2024, he appeared as Dayanand in Saripodhaa Sanivaaram and as Sethuraman 'Sethu' in Raayan. His upcoming films include Game Changer (2025) as Bobbili Mopidevi, Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2 (2025) as A. Arunagiri, Love Insurance Kompany (2026) as Suriyan, and Jailer 2 (2026) as Bodhi Kalpak.
