Rajkummar Rao moved to Mumbai after graduating to pursue a film career and made his debut with the 2010 experimental anthology film Love Sex Aur Dhokha. He then appeared in brief roles in several successful Hindi films before achieving a breakout with the 2013 drama Kai Po Che!, for which he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award at Filmfare. That same year, he won both the Filmfare and National Film Award for Best Actor and Critics Best Actor for his portrayal of Shahid Azmi in the biographical drama Shahid. In 2014, he played the leading man in the romantic comedy Queen and the drama CityLights. He received critical acclaim for his role as a journalist in the biographical drama Aligarh, earning a second Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His later films include the 2017 comedy-drama Newton, where he played Newton Kumar, and the 2017 romantic comedy Bareilly Ki Barfi as Pritam Vidrohi. In 2018, he appeared as Vicky in the horror-comedy Stree and as Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh in the action drama Omertà. He played Alok Kumar Gupta "Aalu" in the 2020 crime comedy Ludo and Mahinder Hooda (Montu) in the 2020 comedy-drama Chhalaang. In 2022, he starred as Jayant Arkhedkar in the crime comedy Monica, O My Darling, as Shardul Thakur in the comedy-drama Badhaai Do, and as Vicky in the horror-comedy Bhediya. He portrayed Srikanth Bolla in the 2024 drama Srikanth and Mahendra "Mahi" Aggarwal in the 2024 drama Mr. & Mrs. Mahi. His upcoming films include Toaster (2026), where he plays Ramakant and also serves as producer.
